Atedo Peterside Biography

Only son and last of three children, Atedo attended the prestigious King’s College Lagos where he obtained his Senior School Certificate. Thereafter, he moved to the UK in 1973 and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Economics from The City University, London in 1976. A year later, he went on to obtain an M.Sc. in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Peterside founded Investment Banking and Trust Company Limited (IBTC) in February 1989 at age 33. Following a merger with Chartered Bank Plc and Regent Bank Plc on December 19th, 2005, the bank became known as IBTC Chartered Bank Plc. The bank again merged with Stanbic Bank Nigeria Limited to form Stanbic IBTC Holdings Plc on September 24th, 2007. He served as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Bank from February 1989 until 2007 and then Chairman from 2007 until September 2014 and later Chairman of Stanbic IBTC Holdings Plc up until March 2017. He is currently a Director of both The Standard Bank of South Africa Limited and Standard Bank Group Limited.

Peterside also serves as the Non-Executive Chairman of Cadbury Nigeria Plc. He is also a member on the Board of Directors of Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc, Nigerian Breweries Plc (Heineken Subsidiary) and Unilever Nigeria Plc. He was the Chairman of the Committee on Corporate Governance of Public Companies in Nigeria which crafted the first Code of Best Practices for Public Companies operating in Nigeria. The Code was published in October 2003.

He served as an independent director of Presco plc from April 17th, 2008 to December 31st, 2014. He served as a non- executive director of Lekoil Limited from February 25th, 2013 to June 2014. He was director of Mobil Oil Nigeria plc from April 19th, 2006 to December 2006, and served on the board of Presco Plc from December 2005 to December 2006. He served as Director of FSDH Merchant Bank Limited.

Peterside was a member of the National Council on Privatisation (NCP) from 2011 until 2015. He was also the Chairman of the NCP’s Technical Committee, in which capacity he oversaw Nigeria’s power sector privatisation programme, which culminated in the privatisation of all the electricity distribution companies in Nigeria and virtually all the generation companies which were previously a part of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria. He was also a member of the National Economic Management Team between 2007 and 2010 and also between 2011 and May 2015.

In May 2017, Peterside was appointed as the Alternate Private Sector Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Industrial Policy and Competitiveness Advisory Council. The Council was inaugurated by the Acting President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on May 30th, 2017. He is also the Founder and President of ANAP Foundation, which is a non-profit organization committed to promoting Good Governance. He is a Member of the Committee for the Revitalisation of the Nigerian Economy. He is regular Commentator on the Nigerian economy and the domestic financial system. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria and is a Member of the Council of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers.

Peterside is married to Mrs. Abiodun Peterside and they have three children.  His father died in 2016 at the age of 97.
